a brief & incomplete list of commonly used terms:
ARM: Advanced RISC Machine. A micro-controller architecture described by ARM holding.
CHIP: Micro chip or electronic component. Electronic device that makes up systems.
COTS: Commercial Off The Shelf. HW devices already made available by manufacturer
CPU: Central Processing Unit
DSP: Digital Signal Processor
Embedded: Dedicated HW/SW/MECHANICAL system for specific solutions. Wikipedia def.
FPGA: Field Programmable Gate Array. A programmable digital component with flexible uses
FW: Firmware. The software that runs on a micro-controller, typically with out as OS.
HW: Hardware.
OS: Operating System.
PCB: Printed Circuit Board. The board where the eletronic components/chips are soldered.
SBC: Single Board Computer. A PCB with CPU and all peripherals integrated.
SoC: System on Chip. An electronic component with uController/CPU and peripherals integrated
SW: Software
uController: micro controller. Electronic component like CPU with internal memory.
